March recognized as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

In recognition of March as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, University of Missouri Health Care is providing blue ribbon pins to support awareness. The pins will be available at Columbia Regional Hospital and University Hospital endoscopy labs, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, the Missouri Digestive Health Center at University Physicians-Fairview Clinic and University Hospital’s Surgery Specialty Clinic.

Going for the Green to benefit Ronald McDonald House

From March 1 to March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of mid-Missouri is challenging everyone in mid-Missouri, a population of over 500,000, to donate one dollar to help families of hospitalized children. Going for the Green donation cans will be set up in all UMHC hospital gift shops and cafeterias. Fit for Life orientation session

Employees can learn about Fit for Life’s employee wellness exercise program at an free orientation session at University Hospital, Room GL-20. The orientation will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 4. To use the Fit for Life facilities, employees are required to attend an orientation, sign a consent form and pay $20 per month. It is an unsupervised program that provides hospital employees a convenient place to exercise. For more information, please contact Fit for Life at (573) 882-4283.

Ellis Fischel to host blood drive

Ellis Fischel Cancer Center will host a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, in Rooms 707A and B. Donors will receive a free T-shirt. Please bring a photo ID.

Former patient to give presentation

Michael Nolte, a former patient in the George David Peak Memorial Burn Center, will speak about his injuries and recovery at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, in Room M105. In 2003, he was involved in a car accident and received third- and fourth-degree burns to more than 40 percent of his body.

Center for Religion and the Professions seminar on religion and rehabilitation

The University of Missouri Center for Religion and the Professions will host a seminar, “Religion and Health Care Rehabilitation,” from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, in MU’s Memorial Union, Room S304. It will be presented by Brick Johnstone, Ph.D., professor of health psychology in the MU School of Health Professions’ Department of Health Psychology.

UMHC to hold free community pulmonary screening

In recognition of March 16 through March 22 as National Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week, University of Missouri Health Care will hold free community pulmonary screenings from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 8, at Gerbes Supermarket, 1729 W. Registered Dietician Day

University of Missouri Health Care will recognize Monday, March 10, as Registered Dietician Day. A total of 17 registered dieticians serve at the health system, including Columbia Regional Hospital, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, Missouri Rehabilitation Center and University Hospital and Clinics. Dieticians are food and nutrition experts who are dedicated to improving the health of patients through providing proper nutrition.

March 11

Health system to participate in severe weather exercise

University of Missouri Health Care will participate in a statewide severe weather exercise at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11. The exercise is designed to test response to severe weather, such as a tornado, simultaneously throughout Missouri. During the exercise, the health system will practice its Code Yellow, severe weather emergency response plan. Evaluators will be placed throughout facilities to assess staff response. Staff in patient-care areas should respond as they would in an actual Code Yellow. Staff in visitor areas, such as cafeterias and lobbies, should respond as in an actual event, however, they are not asked to close down operations and visitors are not asked to participate in the exercise.

In preparation for mid-Missouri’s severe weather season, employees are asked to review the Code Yellow response plan, available in the “Safety and Emergency Management Reference Manual” or by visiting https://myapps.umh.edu/ and selecting “Emergency Management Manual.”

Deadline for Excellence in Nursing Awards nominations

Nominations are being accepted for University of Missouri Health Care’s 2008 Excellence in Nursing Awards. Advanced practice nurses, licensed practical nurses and registered nurses who have contributed to the success of the health system are eligible for the awards. March 15

CRH to co-sponsor track-club fundraising run

Columbia Regional Hospital will co-sponsor the 19th annual St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 15. All proceeds from the race will benefit the Columbia Track Club, which helps young people participate in track events and camps each summer. Kidney-transplant trivia fundraiser

The Central Missouri Kidney Association and Team St. Louis, a Missouri branch of the U.S. Transplant Games, will hold a trivia fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 2525 N. Stadium Blvd in Columbia.

Funds raised will be used to assist dialysis and kidney transplant patients and to assist competitors in attending the 2008 U.S. Transplant Games in July in Pittsburgh. Explorer to speak about managing diabetes

Will Cross will give a presentation about his experiences managing diabetes while exploring the world, including climbing the highest mountains on each continent and visiting the North and South poles.

The presentation will be given at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the Tiger Hotel, located at 23 S. Eighth St. in Columbia. Tickets cost $20 or $10 for students and may be purchased the night of the event at the hotel. The event is sponsored by the MU School of Medicine and will benefit Camp Hickory Hill for diabetic children.

String quartet to perform at University Hospital

The Hickman High School String Quartet will perform from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, in University Hospital’s main lobby. The quartet plays classical music and donates its time monthly to perform for patients, staff and visitors. The performances are sponsored by Art in Health Care.

Seminar on psychological effects of terrorism

A seminar, “Psychological Consequences of Terrorism,” by Syed Husain, MD, professor child health and psychiatry, chief of child and adolescent psychiatry and director of the International Center for Psychosocial Trauma at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, at the MU Sinclair School of Nursing, Room S265.

Center to host seminar on youth perceptions of aging

The University of Missouri Interdisciplinary Center on Aging will sponsor a seminar, “Younger People’s Perceptions of Aging in Italy,” by Rita Cavigioli, PhD, associate professor of Italian in MU’s Department of Romance Languages and Literature, at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in Pickard Hall Auditorium at the MU Museum of Art and Archaeology.

Cavigioli will be on research leave in 2008 and 2009 to study Italian intergenerational discourses, focusing on ways younger people construct and rebut cultural views about aging, age relations and life-stage expectations. Italy has the world’s largest percentage of older people, offering a preview to the future of American society as baby boomers age.

Bake sale to benefit Children’s Miracle Network

The Gamma Eta chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a philanthropic sorority, will host a bake sale from 7:30 to 11 a.m. or until all items are sold on Friday, March 21, in University Hospital’s main lobby. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon.

March 31

Health Connection Tai Chi classes

The Health Connection will hold an eight-week Tai Chi for Health and Wellness course beginning March 31. Classes will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays at The Health Connection. The course, taught by Tai Chi and Qigong instructor Mary Cruise, is an introduction to Tai Chi postures and step-by-step instruction for the Yang Long Form Style and will focus on balance, healthy posture and breathing. Pre-registration before March 31 costs $35 for The Health Connection members and $55 for non-members. Registration costs an additional $10 beginning March 31.
