Disorders of the musculoskeletal system account for 20 percent to 25 percent of all visits to a physician's office. For that reason, any student planning a career in primary care should consider taking one of two fourth-year electives sponsored by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. One rotation focuses on outpatient evaluation and management of musculoskeletal disorders. The other combines an inpatient and outpatient experience. Approximately 1,200 children and adults are seen in the Orthopaedic Clinic each month.

Another option for students interested in orthopaedic surgery is a noncategorical rotation. It offers advanced exposure to students interested in orthopaedic surgery as a career. During a medical student's third year, the experience in orthopaedics is part of the surgery rotation.
