Program Curriculum - Specialty Services
Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
Our third-year residents learn about advanced assisted reproductive technologies, lead by Dr. Danny Schust, an REI physician and world expert in reproductive immunology. Dr. Schust received special recognition as an excellent teacher while at Harvard Medical School, and he has brought that enthusiasm to MU, where he has a special interest in the cause of recurrent miscarriage. Our residents participate in IVF procedures in our rapidly expanding program with Dr. Schust and our other specialty board-certified REI faculty member, Dr. John Cassels.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Although all of our residents deal frequently with high risk obstetrics, our third-year residents specifically rotate on the Maternal-Fetal Medicine service. Experience is gained through daily interactions with our perinatologists, Dr. Randy Floyd and our Chairman, Dr. Hung Winn, in clinic and on the antepartum service. Residents learn to perform obstetrical ultrasounds and amniocentesis and learn to manage such difficult issues as severe fetal malformations, maternal medical complications, and prior adverse pregnancy outcomes.
Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Ray Foster Leads our rapidly expanding Urogynecology Division. Dr. Foster is a graduate of MU who completed his residency at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas, and his Urogyn/ Pelvic Reconstruction fellowship at Duke University. Dr. Foster has received numerous teaching awards and frequently lectures at national Urogynecological meetings.
Our residents participate in outpatient urogynecology during their second year, where they learn to take a detailed history, perform and interpret urodynamic testing, and quantify pelvic organ prolapse using the POP-Q system. More senior residents participate in the operating room with Dr. Foster, where they learn advanced pelvic reconstructive surgical techniques such as slings, paravaginal repair, vault suspension, colpopexy, colporrhaphy, perineorrhaphy, and fistula repair.
