The
Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
focuses on many different aspects of inpatient and
outpatient care. We have a caring staff of physicians
who specialize in each of the following areas of
injury and rehabilitation.
Amputee Care:
Pre-operative evaluation and counseling, pre-prosthetic
training, follow-up in amputee clinic, for routine
or difficult prosthetic needs. Our amputee patients
are seen by Dr.
Joseph Burris.
Brain
Injury: From the intensive care unit to community
re-integration, a person with a brain injury will
require a well coordinated inpatient and outpatient
rehabilitation team. The PM&R department offers
full services for your patient with brain injury
including medical, psychological, educational, and
vocational plans. Dr.
Jon Rupright is our specialist who works with
patients and their families to ensure the best quality
of care possible.
EMG Lab: The EMG
or electrodiagnostic exam provides information about
the status of the neurologic and muscular systems.
It may be helpful in the identification of problems
with the peripheral nerves, myoneural junction and
muscles. Prognostic information may be obtained
which can aid in the planning of further work-up
and therapy. Dr.
Robert Conway, Dr.
John Hoerner, and Dr.
Joseph Burris are highly qualified and dedicated
to this type of work.
Musculoskeletal Pain:
Pain that has not responded to simple measures of
rest and analgesics may require further evaluation
and treatment by the physiatrist. The coordination
of medical evaluation, decisions regarding non-surgical
versus surgical treatment and physical therapy is
our specialty. Early return to work or sport will
be facilitated by a PM&R referral to Dr.
Robert Conway or Dr.
John Hoerner.
Spinal Cord Injury:
The person with a spinal cord injury has special
rehabilitation needs. Education regarding the care
of their skin, bladder and bowel is required. Coordination
of physical therapy to attain maximum independence,
prescription of equipment and development of a life
care plan are among the services offered by Dr.
Michael Acuff and the PM&R team. Long term follow-up
care in the spinal cord injury clinic will minimize
complications.
Stroke: Cerebrovascular
disease is one of the most common disabling conditions
requiring rehabilitation. Persons with hemiparesis,
cognitive and speech deficits benefit from a well
coordinated approach. After an evaluation to identify
rehabilitation goals, the stroke patient may participate
in an inpatient or outpatient program designed to
return him or her to maximum independence. Dr.
Jon Rupright and Dr.
Joseph Burris will assist in each step along
the way to ensure the best recovery possible.
Worker's Compensation:
Treatment and management of the injured worker
often requires the services of a specialist in Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation. From initial assessment
with rapid re-integration to work, through coordination
of therapy services, the injured worker is cared
for in an environment that promotes fitness for
duty. If assessment of permanent partial disability
or other case closure services are required, these
are available through our PM&R clinic by Dr.
Robert Conway, Dr.
John Hoerner , or Dr.
Jon Rupright. Our worker's compensation coordinator
is Monica
Harris. |
