Missouri Rehabilitation Center has been providing specialized care to patients with pulmonary distress for almost 100 years. Patients are served through a variety of programs and services, including:

Intensive Care Unit

Our modern, state-of-the art intensive care unit makes it possible to accept patients from other hospital trauma intensive care units.

Ventilator Weaning Program

MRC operates one of the largest and most successful ventilator weaning programs in the state. Physicians specializing in pulmonology and critical care direct and supervise a whole team of respiratory therapists and other specialists during the entire weaning process.

Through a gradual process, most patients achieve total independence at MRC. Others may accomplish independence for part of each day while still needing a ventilator at night. When weaning is not possible, family members may be trained to care for the ventilator-dependent patient at home, or the patient may be transferred to a long-term care facility.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Patients with irreversible conditions such as emphysema are taught to live comfortably and productively through pulmonary rehabilitation.

Diet, exercise, medication and self-care training help patients conserve strength, reduce stress and cope more effectively with disease. Education helps patients recognize problems and seek treatment before their condition becomes severe enough to require hospitalization again. Family members may be taught to care for their loved ones when their condition becomes stable enough to return home.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

MRC offers three phases of a four-phase Cardiac Rehab Program. The program is designed to assist patients who have been hospitalized with a heart attack or heart disease. The program also serves those who are in danger of having a progression of heart problems. The goal is to help patients prevent future heart attacks and overcome heart problems that are already in progress.

The Cardiac Rehab Program is an outpatient program for those who have already completed Phase 1 (acute cardiac rehabilitation) at another hospital and have been discharged or are at risk for cardiac problems. MRC provides Phase 2, 3 and 4 as follows:

Phase 2 consists of a 12-week prescribed exercise program, which is electronically monitored by a cardiac nurse.

Phase 3 is a maintenance program for Phase 2 graduates and higher risk cardiac patients.

Phase 4 is a program for spouses and caregivers.

Education sessions on diet and lifestyle are conducted for patients and their spouses or caregivers in all levels of the program. Information pertinent to cardiac physiology and disease is stressed.

State Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory

The Missouri Department of Health operates the State Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory on site. The lab accepts sputum samples from throughout the state for confirmation of active tuberculosis.
