Staff Categories

Medical Staff Categories

Active Category

Appointees to this category are licensed independent practitioners and have been involved in at least eleven (11) patient contacts at an MU Health Care facility within a one-year period. Patient contact is defined as: an inpatient admission, consultation, surgical procedure or outpatient visit; for radiologists, pathologists, or similar hospital-based physicians, a patient contact may include interpretation of a diagnostic test. The patient contact requirement may be waived for practitioners in the Active category with at least twenty (20) years of service in the Active category or for those physicians who document their efforts to support the hospital’s patient care, education or research mission to the satisfaction of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff (ECOMS) and Governing Authority. Members of this category may vote on all matters presented by the medical staff and by the appropriate department and committee of which he or she is a member. In the event that an appointee to the active category does not meet the qualifications for reappointment to the active category, and if the appointee is otherwise abiding by all Bylaws, Rules, Regulations and policies of the staff, the appointee may be appointed to the affiliate category.

Responsibilities - Appointees to this category must:

  • Contribute to the organizational and administrative affairs of the medical staff.
  • Be continuously supportive of the patient care, education or research mission to the satisfaction of the Executive Committee and Governing Authority.
  • Actively participate in recognized functions of the staff appointment, including quality/performance improvement, risk management and monitoring activities, including discharging other staff functions as may be required.
  • Fulfill any meeting attendance requirements as established by the medical staff.

Affiliate Category

The affiliate category is reserved for practitioners who do not meet the eligibility requirements for the active category or choose not to pursue active status.

Responsibilities - Appointees to this category must:

  • Contribute to the organizational and administrative affairs of the medical staff.
  • Be continuously supportive of the patient care, education or research mission to the satisfaction of the Executive Committee and Governing Authority.
  • Fulfill any meeting attendance requirements as established by the medical staff.

Honorary Category

The honorary category is restricted to those individuals recommended by the Executive Committee and approved by the Governing Authority. Appointment to this category is entirely discretionary and may be rescinded at any time. Appointees are not eligible for clinical privileges. They may attend medical staff department meetings, continuing medical education activities, and may be appointed to committees. They are required to maintain licensure in the State of Missouri. They shall not hold office or be eligible to vote.

Allied Health Staff Categories

Allied Health Active Category

Appointees to this category must be involved in twenty (20) patient contacts within a two-year (2) period. The patient contact requirement may be waived for practitioners with at least twenty (20) years of service in the active category or for those practitioners who document their efforts to support the hospital’s patient care, education and research mission to the satisfaction of the ECOMS. In the event that an appointee to the active category does not meet the qualifications for reappointment to the allied health active category, and if the appointee is otherwise abiding by all Bylaws, Rules, Regulations and policies of the allied health, the appointee may be appointed to the affiliate category.

  • Contribute to the organization and administrative affairs of the allied health staff.
  • Be continuously supportive of the patient care, education or research mission to the satisfaction of the Executive Committee and Governing Authority.
  • Actively participate in recognized functions, including quality/performance improvement, risk management and monitoring activities, including discharging other staff functions as may be required.
  • Fulfill any meeting attendance requirements as established by the allied health staff.

Allied Health Affilate Category

The allied health affiliate category is reserved for practitioners who do not meet the eligibility requirements for the allied health active category or choose not to pursue active status.

Responsibilities - Appointees to this category must:

  • Contribute to the organization and administrative affairs of the allied health staff.
  • Be continuously supportive of the patient care, education or research mission to the satisfaction of the Executive Committee and Governing Authority.
  • Actively participate in recognized functions, including quality/performance improvement, risk management and monitoring activities, including discharging other staff functions as may be required.
  • Fulfill any meeting attendance requirements as established by the allied health staff.

Allied Health Temporary Category

The allied health temporary category is reserved for practitioners who are members of a staffing agency or are on a private contract and serving as a locum on a temporary basis. This category is also for locum providers paid by the university and not through a staffing agency or private contract.

Responsibilities - Appointees to this category must:

  • Contribute to the organization and administrative affairs of the allied health staff.
  • Be continuously supportive of the patient care, education or research mission to the satisfaction of the Executive Committee and Governing Authority.
  • Actively participate in recognized functions, including quality/performance improvement, risk management and monitoring activities, including discharging other staff functions as may be required.
  • Fulfill any meeting attendance requirements as established by the allied health staff.

Allied Health Honorary Category

This category is reserved for those individuals recommended by the Allied Health Credentials Committee, Medical Staff Credentials Committee and approved by the ECOMS. Appointment to this category is entirely discretionary and may be rescinded at any time. Applicants in this category are not eligible for clinical privileges. Applicants in this category must maintain all required state licenses and documents of recognition to practice in the State of Missouri.
