University Hospital’s 50th Anniversary Employee Talent Show

A large audience filled Bryant Auditorium Thursday, Sept. 7, for University Hospital’s 50th Anniversary Employee Talent Show.

Thomas Selva, M.D., assistant professor of child health, won first-place for his rendition of Howie Day’s “Collide.” As an encore, Selva performed the Barenaked Ladies’ “The Old Apartment.”

William Linzie, distribution staff member, claimed second-place for his original gospel song, “Lord, I Thank You.”

Third place was awarded to Olivia Wright, office support staff for emergency services, who performed Gretchen Wilson’s “Redneck Woman.”

Audience members voted on their favorite act, and the winner of the People’s Choice Award will be announced at University Hospital’s birthday party on Friday, Sept. 15. All employees are invited to the party from 2:30 to 5 p.m. in the hospital’s main lobby.

Employees from a variety of departments and professions provided a wide variety of entertainment at the talent show. The 14 acts included two dancers. Mindy Northrup, ultrasonographer, performed a traditional Irish dance, “Reel.” Amy Lynch, health care recruiter, performed a contemporary ballet dance.

Although most employees performed songs, there was no one set style of music. Songs ranged from religious to rock and were performed in a variety of ways, from solos and duets to a band.

A capella singers included Russell Becker, health records technician, who opened the show with “Comedy Tonight,” and the trio of Louise Harvey, patient service representative, Grace Vega, coordinator of language services, and Susan Dickerson, computer project manager, performing “I Believe.”

Solos included country songs performed by LuAnn Tandy, Magnet coordinator, who sang Gretchen Wilson’s “I Don’t Feel Like Loving You Today,” and Sarah Wilkerson, registered cytotechnologist, who sang Faith Hill’s “Let Me Let Go.” Amy Camp, reimbursement specialist, sang the gospel song, “Carry the Light.” Angelica Headrick, custodian, performed Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You.”

Duets included a performance of “The Prayer,” by David Melegrito, patient service representative, and Kelley Marchbanks, coordinator of legislative relations for alumni and development at MU. Jennifer DeLucy, office support staff for psychiatry, sang “My Funny Valentine,” accompanied on guitar by Andrew Resnik, M.D.

Gary Ostercamp, staff chaplain, Neil Ostercamp, MU graduate student, and Art Dyer, staff chaplain, performed Neil Young’s rock song, “Old Man,” with the Ostercamps on vocals and guitar, and Dyer on drums.

Emceeing the event was Greg Jackson, office support staff member, who introduced the acts and announced the winners.

Celebrity judges included Dave Schmidt, KOMU weathercaster; Jack Smith, Jack Smith Creative Services; and Kathy Roberts, Hickman High School theater teacher and co-chair of Partners in Education.

The event was planned by the talent show committee. Members included Justin Delap, clinical improvement specialist; Greg Jackson; Juni Muhota, project manager; Andrew Spain, emergency suite assistant manager; Jen Wheeler, manager of University Hospital’s 50th anniversary celebration; and Sharon Yaeger, director of hospital financial services.
