The Role of Art in Health Care

No one wants to be in the hospital. There is nothing fun about being sick or having a loved one who is suffering from an illness. This is where the arts can play a key role in the health care setting. Research suggests that the incorporation of the arts into the healthcare environment can increase patient satisfaction, reduce length of stay and can actually reduce the time it takes a person to heal. These are just a few of the benefits of having an Art in Health Care program. To learn more about what hospitals and health systems are doing to integrate arts, please visit the Society for the Arts in Healthcare.

Background of Art in Health Care

The Art in Health Care program at UMHC is relatively new and we are still working to expand and grow to provide better outcomes for the individuals we serve. The incorporation of the arts into the healthcare setting has been in existence since the late 1970s. We have looked at many of these programs and determined what has been successful in those environments and concluded how we can implement programs and services that have a proven record of success. We are also looking at how we can utilize the vast amount of local talent to best develop a program that will be both long lasting and successful.

Type of Art

We want to integrate visual, literary and performing arts as essential components of health care to create a positive environment for healing the body, mind and spirit. This provides an opportunity for artists to have their work displayed or a venue for performance while being seen in their community. There is a great deal of talent and ability in Columbia and the surrounding area and we would like to utilize those resources for our patients and staff.
