Special Audiology Testing Services
Auditory brainstem response (ABR)
ABR is the electrophysiologic measurement of neural activity in response to sound. This noninvasive procedure is used to evaluate hearing sensitivity and/or to assess the neural integrity of the acoustic nerve.
- Pediatric ABR with sedation
We offer hearing sensitivity assessment to children through the ABR test. The procedure takes place under conscious sedation while the child is closely monitored at all times by a nurse.
- Newborn ABR hearing screening
Automated ABR is used on our youngest patients as a screening mechanism to detect hearing loss in infants from birth to five months of age.
- ABR testing
We test to assess neurological functioning on adults and older children.
Vestibular evaluations
Each of the following tests includes analysis and interpretation of results following assessment.
- Electronystagmography (ENG)
Vestibular/balance functioning is evaluated in this test, while eye movements are recorded under different stimulus conditions.
- Platform posturography
This functional test evaluates a patient’s ability to make use of various visual, vestibular and somatosensory cues.
- Rotational chair
During slow and precise chair rotation, the gain (strength), phase and asymmetry of the vestibulo-ocular reflex is assessed through eye movement recordings.
Central auditory processing evaluations
In children, central auditory processing evaluations consist of a battery of behavioral tests designed to evaluate the integrity of the central auditory nervous system. Interpretation of results, counseling options and treatment recommendations are discussed with the parent or guardian.
Cochlear implants
Cochlear implants are designed for individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who receive no benefit from hearing aids. Cochlear implant services include evaluation for candidacy, programming of the implant after the surgical procedure, aural rehabilitation and follow-up. Cochlear implant equipment and supplies along with troubleshooting services also are available.
Otoacoustic emissions testing
Otoacoustic emissions testing can be performed to assess the sensory component of hearing by evaluating hair cell function in cochlea, or inner ear.
