Nursing Fellowship


The MUHC Nurse Fellowship program is designed to support the transition of the new RN from novice to competent practitioner according to Benner's model From Novice to Expert. The program utilizes a combination of learning activities including didactic instruction with case studies by clinical content experts, structured clinical immersion experiences with team precepting, structured mentoring and debriefing/self-care sessions, looping to related departments, and competency validation. The primary goal of the program is to enhance critical thinking skills, develop skills competency and self-confidence, and promote the delivery of safe and effective patient care.

The goals of the program are to:

  • Demonstrate effective critical thinking and decision-making skills related to clinical judgment and performance of patient care.
  • Exhibit competent technical skills for procedures and use of patient care equipment common to their assigned area.
  • Incorporate nursing evidence into daily practice.
  • Utilize excellent patient communication and customer service skills.
  • Conduct effective patient/family education.
  • Consistently implement the nursing process for admission assessment, care delivery and evaluation of outcomes for discharge readiness.
  • Display confident clinical leadership at the point of care.
  • Strengthen the registered Nurse's committment to nursing as a professional career choice, enhance loyalty to the University of Missouri Health System, and positively assimilate graduate nurses into the community of nursing at MUHC.

General Information

We offer the 14 month Nurse Fellowship Program three times per year with cohorts starting in January, May/June, and August.

Criteria

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing within the last year and ≤ 6 months experience as a GN/RN
  • RN licensure or a permit to work as a Graduate Nurse pending licensure
