At MU Children's Hospital we care for even the tinest Missourians. At the neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU, we treat more than 500 premature and cricially ill infants each year. You can trust that our team of world-class physicians and staff will treat you and your baby with the understanding, sensitivity and love you have come to expect from Children's Hospital.
Our team at the NICU can offer state-of-the-art comprehensive level three neonatal intensive care services provided by a highly skilled, multidisciplinary team of health care professionals including specially trained nurses, physicians, respiratory care practitioners, advanced practice nurses, social workers and pharmacists.
Each year, the neonatal transport team helps approximately 350 babies from other health-care facilities get to the care they need at the Children's Hospital's NICU. The transport team consists of specially trained nurses and respiratory care practitioners whose main focus is transporting babies who weigh less than 15 pounds.
A Long History
Established on July 1, 1971, under the guidance of neonatologist Elizabeth James, MD, the MU Children's Hospital NICU is currently led by Medical Director, John Pardalos, MD, who works closely with five other neonatologists in caring for the NICU's tiny patients.
The NICU moved to its present-day facilities at MU Children's Hospital in November 2003 where the unit continues to strive toward the very best care for every newborn.
The babies that are seen in the NICU are often facing many challenges. The team at the NICU are committed to achieving the most positive outcomes for these patients and often stay in touch with the families and the patients well after the kids have "graduated" from the NICU. The smallest patient admitted to the NICU was a 22 4/7 week male infant. At birth, he weighed approximately 15 3/4 ounces. He just celebrated his fifth birthday.
