What is cardiac rehabilitation?
Fit for Life's cardiac rehab program is designed to help heart patients recover quickly and improve their overall l physical, mental, and social health. A team of physicians, nurses, and dietitians develop an individualized program for each patient. Both the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology recommend cardiac rehab.
Who can benefit from cardiac rehab?
If you have had any of the following:
- Chest pain (angina)
- Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
- Open heart surgery
- Coronary angioplasty or stents
- Heart valve replacement
- Heart transplant
- Congestive heart failure (CHF)
- Peripheral arterial disease
What are the possible benefits of cardiac rehab
- Increased functional capacity
- Increased knowledge of disease process and treatment
- Improved lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of future heart attack or stroke
- Improved blood pressure control
- Improved cholesterol
- Increased support and motivation to help make important lifestyle changes
What is included in the cardiac rehab program?
- Phase I cardiac rehab
During your hospital stay, a cardiac rehab nurse will speak with you regarding activity progression, and give you individualized information and education about the recovery process and risk factor management.
- Phase II cardiac rehab
Once an order from your physician for phase II cardiac rehab is received, the Fit For Life staff will call you to discuss the program and schedule a start date.
What does the program include?
- Medical evaluation
- Monitored exercise
- Risk factor management including: cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, weight, and smoking
- Lifestyle education
- Physical activity counseling
- Nutritional counseling
- Communication with your referring physician
- Energy Medicine classes
How long does the program last?
The length of the program varies from patient to patient; however, many patients may qualify for up to 36 sessions over a 12 week time period. Sessions are typically completed 3 times per week.
Where is the program located?
Fit For Life is conveniently located on the ground floor of University Hospital in GL-20 right below the main entrance. University Hospital also offers free valet service Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Is cardiac rehab covered by insurance?
Phase II cardiac rehab is covered by most insurance companies for the diagnoses listed above. We will assist with contacting your insurance company to determine coverage prior to your initial session.
What happens after completion of cardiac rehab?
After completion of phase II cardiac rehab, there are several options to maintain and continue to improve your health and wellness. Fit for Life offers a phase III or maintenance cardiac rehab program. This allows you to participate in supervised exercise. You may also feel comfortable enough to continue your exercise program at home or at a local gym. Regardless of the path you choose, we encourage you to continue working toward the successful management of living with heart disease.
