5 West Surgical Unit
About Our Unit
The 5 West Surgical Unit primarily houses patients from the following services: general surgery, trauma, cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery and neurology. Patients from other services may also be on our unit.
Your Health Care Team
Your care will be provided by a number of different health care professionals. This includes but is not limited to doctors, advance practice nurses, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing technicians, physical therapists, pharmacists, social workers, dietitians and chaplains. Members of your health care team will make daily patient rounds to discuss your hospitalization. We collaborate to make sure you are receiving appropriate care and prepare you for discharge from the hospital. It is vitally important that you, the patient, and your family be very involved with your care. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. We are here to provide you with the best care.
Visiting hours are from noon to 9 p.m. Staff may restrict visitation when it is in the best interests of our patients or if you have requested that we limit visitors. We understand that it can be difficult to get rest if you have too many visitors. Please ask family and friends not to visit if they have a cold or other contagious illness. Ask your visitors to wash their hands when entering your room in order to minimize any chance of spreading germs.
Generally, visitors are not allowed to stay in the patient’s room overnight. We can make exceptions if the patient is medically unstable and is in a private room. We encourage visitors to take good care of themselves and seek accommodations that help them get a good night’s sleep. The nursing staff or Guest Relations can help guests find a local motel. Family members can leave a phone number where they can be reached with the nursing staff. Families are also welcome to call the nursing unit at any time to speak with your nurse. We cannot give out information to non-family members unless you give us permission to do so. The phone number for the 5 West Surgical Unit is (573) 882-8111.
The 5th Floor visitor lounge, located at the east end of the floor, is available for overnight guests if they are unable to leave the hospital. Linens are provided. Overnight guests must be at least 18 years old. Shower facilities are located on the Ground Floor. The women’s shower unit is in GW-12, and the men’s unit is in GW-8.
For Your Health and Safety
We ask that you do not keep valuables or medication at your bedside. Please send these home with your family as we cannot be responsible for them. If you forget to send something valuable home with your family, tell your nurse and arrangements will be made to lock your valuables up in Security. Food and beverage storage and cooking are not allowed in the visitor lounges.
It is important that you have good nutrition during your hospitalization. A menu will be provided each morning for you to select the foods of your choice. Please mark this menu and leave it on your bedside table. If you need assistance in filling out your menu, the Dietary staff or your nurse can assist you. A staff member from the Dietary Department will come by to pick up your menu. We may change your menu if your doctor orders a special diet. We may hold your meal if a special test or procedure is ordered that requires you to go without food or drink for a period of time. We request that before someone brings you food from outside the hospital that you check with the nursing staff to make sure it fits with the diet ordered by your doctor.
The nursing staff will keep track of what you eat and drink so that we can monitor your fluid and nutritional intake. There are refrigerators available on our unit stocked with beverages and snacks for our patients. In order to meet state health regulations, only food delivered by the Dietary Department can be stored in these refrigerators. Snack carts come to the unit each afternoon. You will be allowed to select snacks of your choice as long as it is part of the diet ordered by your doctor. If you do not like the meal served to you by Dietary, let your nurse know. We will make every attempt to get you food that is appealing to you. If you have any questions about your diet, tell your nurse so that we can arrange for a dietitian to talk with you.
Concerns About Your Care
If you have questions about your hospitalization, don’t hesitate to let your nurse know. We will do our best to get your questions answered. If you have concerns about your care, please ask to speak to the nursing supervisor or the department manager. We also welcome positive comments about the care you have received. After you go home, you may call us day or night with your questions or concerns.
