COLUMBIA, Mo. — Ellis Fischel Cancer Center has received a three-year accreditation with commendation from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.
The recognition is the highest honor given by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. Only 25 percent of all hospitals in the United States receive this prestigious designation.
“Approval with commendation reflects highly on the quality of care we provide at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center,” said Kristi Gafford, M.B.A., M.P.H., executive director of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. “It signifies to our cancer patients and their families that we are committed to providing a comprehensive cancer program focused on the research, prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer.”
To achieve accreditation, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center demonstrated it is meeting and exceeding all 36 standards that represent a full scope of a comprehensive cancer center.
Approval by the national commission is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. To maintain approval, facilities with approved cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
During an on-site visit in December, surveyors awarded special commendation to Ellis Fischel for its cancer registry abstracting; submissions to the national cancer database; clinical trials accrual; number of prevention and early detection programs offered; professional education for cancer registry staff and quality improvements.
“The American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer sets very high standards for quality cancer programs,” said Charles Caldwell, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. “To receive accreditation with six commendations is a strong testament to the outstanding comprehensive cancer care we are providing patients at Ellis Fischel.”
Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, a part of University of Missouri Health Care, provides comprehensive cancer care to patients from every county in the state. More than 100 physician specialists and other trained professionals work together to improve and save the lives of cancer patients. Designated Missouri’s official state cancer center in 2004, Ellis Fischel services include inpatient and outpatient treatment and cancer screening.
