University Of Missouri Health Care Earns 'A' Rating For Patient Safety From The Leapfrog Group

COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri Health Care has been recognized with an "A" rating for patient safety by The Leapfrog Group, a national health care quality organization.

The Leapfrog Group's top score was awarded to MU Health Care in the latest update to the Hospital Safety Score website, where The Leapfrog Group awards hospitals throughout the United States with "A," "B," "C," "D" or "F" grades. The scores are based on hospitals' performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

"This recognition underscores the commitment of all our physicians, nurses, and other health professionals to providing safe, high-quality health care," said Mitch Wasden, Ed.D., chief executive officer and chief operating officer of MU Health Care. "We are proud to receive this 'A' rating."

The Leapfrog Group's Hospital Safety Score grading system was compiled under the guidance of national experts on patient safety. It uses 26 measures of publicly available data about hospital safety to produce a single score representing a hospital's efforts to ensure patient safety.

"Earning an 'A' on the Hospital Safety Score demonstrates that this hospital has exhibited excellence in our national database of patient safety measures," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "I'd like to congratulate MU Health Care for your achievements and encourage you to continue to put a priority on the safety of your patients."

MU Health Care has a tradition of providing nationally recognized patient care. MU Health Care was the only hospital or health system in Columbia or central Missouri to make U.S. News and World Report's 2012 list of best hospitals. The list ranked MU Health Care in the top two out of more than 100 hospitals in Missouri. MU Health Care's ear, nose and throat program was rated among the top 50 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, and MU Health Care was rated as "high performing" in eight adult specialties.

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization using the collective leverage of large purchasers of health care to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for Americans. The Leapfrog Group was founded in November 2000 with support from the Business Roundtable and national funders, and is now independently operated with support from its purchaser and other members.
