University of Missouri Health Care News Releases
Tournament Offers Swings of Support For Local Breast Cancer Initiatives

COLUMBIA, Mo. - On Monday, Aug. 5, golfers from around mid-Missouri will take a swing of support for local breast cancer initiatives at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center.

The 13th annual Deon Starman Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at the newly remodeled golf course at the Columbia Country Club. The tournament features two-person teams playing 18 holes of golf, with prizes awarded to winners in the men's and women's divisions.

The tournament is dedicated to the honor and memory of Deon Starman, who was an avid golfer and proponent for local breast cancer research. Starman died unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm in December 2004. Deon's husband, Dave, organizes the annual golf tournament to honor his late wife and support the two causes that Deon felt passionate about - golfing and finding a cure for breast cancer.

In 2012, the golf tournament raised $19,500, which supported the breast imaging waiting area in the new Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. Through the years, the tournament has raised $140,000 for local breast cancer research and initiatives.

"We are very grateful for the years of dedication the Starmans have shown in support of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center," said David Parker, executive director of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. "It is clear the Starmans share our passion for one day finding a cure and better treatments for breast cancer."

The tournament will feature a live auction, including a basketball autographed by University of Missouri basketball coach Frank Haith, and other items such as gift certificates to local restaurants.

The entry fee is $200 per team, which includes use of a golf cart and range balls. Lunch will be served and heavy appetizers from D. Rowe's will be available after the tournament. To register for the tournament, please contact Dave Starman at (573) 808-3050.
