COLUMBIA, Mo. - As part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center will sponsor after-hours "mammothon" breast-cancer screenings from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, Oct. 4, and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 5.
The screenings will be held at Ellis Fischel's new facility at University Hospital, One Hospital Drive, Columbia. Parking will be available in the Patient-Visitor Parking Garage adjacent to University Hospital.
"Mammography is the best screening technique we have for catching breast cancer early, when it's most treatable," said Paul Dale, M.D., chief of surgical oncology at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, the Margaret Proctor Mulligan Distinguished Professor in Medical Research and interim medical director of Ellis Fischel. "And with technology such as digital and 3-D mammography, we're able to catch breast cancers earlier than ever before."
Ellis Fischel Cancer Center's breast health program is the only breast center in central Missouri accredited by the American College of Surgeons' National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, demonstrating Ellis Fischel's commitment to breast cancer screening, treatment, research and community outreach.
"With programs such as after-hours screenings and our mobile mammogram van, which travels to towns throughout mid-Missouri, we want to make it easy for women to receive life-saving breast cancer screenings," said Debra Deeken, R.N., M.S.N., manager of Ellis Fischel's breast center.
To receive a mammogram, women must be age 40 or older or have a doctor's order. In addition to breast screenings, staff at the mammothon will provide information and education about breast cancer, as well as refreshments and door prizes. Mammograms will be available by appointment only. For more information or to make an appointment, please call Ellis Fischel Cancer Center at (573) 882-8511.
