University of Missouri Health Care News Releases
MU Children's Hospital, Kohl's to Offer Free Bicycle Helmets, Fittings

COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri Children's Hospital and Kohl's Department Stores are teaming up for a free bicycle helmet giveaway and fitting event from 10:30 to noon Friday, Nov. 15, at MU Women's and Children's Hospital's Conference Center, 404 Keene Street in Columbia.

The first 50 children 14 years old and younger attending the event will receive a free bicycle helmet and fitting. Trained safety experts also will be available to answer questions from parents about bicycle safety.

The free helmets are provided through Kohl's annual support of the Kohl's Safety Store at MU Children's Hospital. The online store, at www.muhealth.org/kohlssafetystore, provides car seats, bicycle helmets and additional safety items to families in 10 mid-Missouri counties.

Kicking off the event, Kohl's will renew its support of the Kohl's Safety Store with a $31,125 donation to MU Children's Hospital. Representatives from both organizations will attend the check presentation.

"We are grateful for Kohl's continued support of MU Children's Hospital and our efforts to prevent accidental injuries in mid-Missouri children," said George Koburov, M.D., medical director of Children's Hospital's emergency department. "The Kohl's Safety Store is a wonderful resource for families to receive life-saving safety equipment. We encourage anyone in need of these resources to contact MU Children's Hospital."

The Kohl's Safety Store features a website where mid-Missouri families can view available child safety items. The website also features instructions on how to order items.

Among the items available at the Kohl's Safety Store are booster seats, including high-back booster seats, child safety seats, bicycle helmets, personal flotation devices and reflective devices that allow children to be seen by motorists in the dark.

The Kohl's Safety Store is designed to assist families who would not have the financial means to purchase these items without the assistance of the safety store. Families seeking assistance from the online store must live in one of 10 mid-Missouri counties to qualify: Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Miller, Moniteau, Morgan or Randolph.

University of Missouri Health Care's injury prevention program works to educate children and families on safety and preventing childhood injuries and death. The program has benefited from the generosity of Kohl's. Since 2007, Kohl's has donated approximately $240,000 to Children's Hospital through the Kohl's Cares program.

Kohl's commitment to MU Children's Hospital is made possible through the Kohl's Cares merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl's sells $5 books and plush toys, and 100 percent of net profits benefit children's health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships.
