University of Missouri Health Care News Releases
Twins at MU Children's Hospital Named 'Nurses of the Year' by March of Dimes
COLUMBIA, Mo. ― Twin sisters Sarah Cammack, R.N., and Jennifer Hanford, R.N., critical care nurses in University of Missouri Children’s Hospital’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit, recently were both named 2013 March of Dimes Nurses of the Year. The sisters were two of 22 nurses statewide to receive the award at a November ceremony in St. Louis.

The sisters are very familiar with the NICU, where they care for MU Children’s Hospital’s tiniest patients. As premature babies, the twin nurses were themselves NICU patients.

“Our parents also were nurses in the hospital’s NICU,” said Hanford. “Being exposed to the environment at such an early age, both as patients and throughout our lives because our parents worked here, we definitely were motivated to be a part of the unit as we grew older.”

Barb Brucks, R.N., now manager of the NICU, cared for the twins 29 years ago as a nurse on the unit. Brucks nominated the sisters for the award.

“They are outstanding nurses and have contributed so much to our hospital,” Brucks said. “They deserve to be recognized for their extraordinary level of patient care, compassion and leadership in the nursing profession.”

More than 300 nominations were submitted representing 55 different health organizations throughout Missouri. A selection committee of health care professionals reviewed the nominations and determined the winners.

The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of all babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The Nurse of the Year initiative supports this mission while recognizing exceptional nurses throughout the state and celebrating the profession.
