Dr. Barnes joined our health system in 2008 after serving in the U.S. Air Force. He completed training in trauma and critical care at the University of Kentucky and advanced laparoscopic surgery at the University of Cincinnati.

Jeffery P. Coughenour, MD, FACS

Medical Director, Surgical Critical Care

Dr. Coughenour, a native of Moberly, completed a trauma and critical care fellowship at the University of Kentucky. He also serves as the Missouri EMS System Central Region Medical Director.

James W. Kessel, MD, FACS
Professor of Clinical Surgery
Medical Director, Trauma

Dr. Kessel came to the University of Missouri from West Virginia in 2003. He completed advanced training in trauma surgery at Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore, and remains active in the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

Christopher S. Nelson, MD
Clinical Instructor
Surgical Critical Care

Dr. Nelson is a native of North Dakota and completed general surgery residency here at the University of Missouri. He is active in resident and outreach education.
