Financial and Insurance Information

Regardless of your financial situation go to Registration/Admissions as soon as possible after you arrive to register your family member. Take any insurance information and give authorization for medical care.  Registration/Admissions is in the main hospital lobby and is open daily from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

If your child is not insured, a Financial Counselor can help you explore different financial options. They can put you in touch with a Family Support Division (FSD) eligibility specialist, assist in applications, and discuss payment options with you.

MO Healthnet

The State of Missouri has several different government programs that can help children with their medical bills. It is important to apply for MO Healthnet as soon as possible.  Timely completion of your child's application can affect coverage. We simplify the application process by asking questions and completing the form for you.  As a responsible party for the patient you will need to sign the form. Medical emergencies can cause a financial hardship for anyone.  MO Healthnet is designed to help families deal with financial issues related to a medical crisis.

How can my child qualify?
Go directly to Registration/Admissions services, or if you prefer, call the Social Services office at (573) 882-2222.  They will contact FSD for you to schedule an eligibility specialist visit.  The FSD specialist will come directly to your child's room to complete the application with you to start the process.

When will I know?
Applications are screened for a preliminary decision the day they are received. The final decision may take up to 90 days. Decisions are made by the Missouri State Medical Review Team and not by the hospital.

What if my child is denied?
Request an explanation from your FSD specialist. If you do not agree with the decision you may appeal.

Social Security

Social Security does not pay for medical bills.  It provides a monthly income for people who qualify. Call the Social Security Administration office for more information at (800) 772-1213 or contact a Financial Counselor at (573) 884-9900.

Medicare is a form of financial assistance.  In general, it is for people who are at least 65 years of age or who have received disability benefits for at least 2 years. However, some children with certain medical conditions may qualify as well.  Call the Social Security Administration (800) 772-1213 or a Financial Counselor at (573) 884-9900 for details.

Financial Assistance

Our Patient Financial Assistance Program helps to make our services available to everyone in our community. This includes people who don't have health insurance and can't pay their hospital bill, and patients who do have insurance but are unable to pay the portion of their bill that insurance doesn't cover.  In some cases, eligible patients may not be required to pay for services; in others, they may be asked to make partial payment.  In order to determine this, the guarantor will need to complete a Financial Assistance Application and include proof of income or income tax return. Financial Assistance applications are available by calling Self Pay Billing Office at (573) 884-3300 or toll free (800) 877-2372.  They can also be obtained at University Hospital's Financial Counseling department or through the Related Links section to the left.
