Sympton Evaluation Unit
This mission of the Symptom Evaluation Unit (SEU) is to provide quality urgent care for unscheduled Ellis Fischel Cancer Center patients. We will provide immediate evaluation or short-term management of the symptoms of cancer of side effects of treatment.
The nurse practitioner available during the day can perform a wide variety of assessments, order appropriate testing, apply treatments and give medications. The staff will communicate directly with your doctor to create a plan of care. They can provide intravenous hydration, assist with symptoms such as pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation. The staff can provide extensive diagnostic workups for new or worsening symptoms.
If you are an EFCC patient, you may need to be seen if you experience any of the following symptoms or difficulties:
- Abdominal swelling
- Bleeding
- Constipation
- Cough
- Dehydration
- Dizziness
- Diarrhea
- Inflamed mouth or throat
- Nausea
- Pain
- Painful Urination
- Shortness of breath
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Wound drain or tube complication
Please call your doctor's office or the SEU at (573) 884-3681 or (573) 882-8523 before coming. This helps us prepare your plan of care. The unit is fully staffed from 8 am to 5 pm., Monday through Friday. You may call SEU directly and speak to the nurse practitioner or your doctor may refer you directly. The Ellis Fischel staff also may call to arrange a visit for you.
After regular business hours, the SEU is available by phone t help you with questions 24 hours a day. If you need to be seen, your case will be evaluated by the physician on call. The SEU is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please do not hesitate to call for any question, concern or problem. The nursing staff will assist you by answering questions or helping you access the nurse practitioner or the oncology physician on call. When you call, the staff will help you decide if the SEU is the best place to get the help you need
