Treatment goals
Our purpose is to provide adults and their families with optimal treatment, including a comprehensive evaluation, stabilization, short-term treatment and arrangements for aftercare in a secure environment. On admission to the inpatient unit, the patient receives a psychiatric evaluation and physical examination as well as a panel of routine laboratory tests. Ongoing interviews and clinical observations may provide further diagnostic information. Testing and diagnostic procedures may include neurological evaluation, including electroencephalogram and state of the art neuroimaging procedures, such as MRI. The patient's physician will discuss the testing procedures and results with the patient.

Treatment team
Your attending psychiatrist is a medical doctor with additional specialty training in psychiatry. A resident is a medical doctor who is completing specialized training in psychiatry. Nursing staff will monitor and document your basic health needs and assist with medications. A social worker can provide counseling and education and help you locate resources such as housing. Occupational therapists lead groups on topics such as problem solving, communication, anger management, coping skills, stress management and goal setting.

Voluntary admission
Requesting discharge will require the patient's physician to re-evaluate prior to release and issue a written discharge order.

Activity therapy
Activity therapy is provided and includes physical activity, leisure activities, and arts and crafts. An activity therapist assesses each patient's individual needs to plan a program that meets his or her therapeutic goals.

Medical services
On admission, each patient is assigned a physician who is in charge of the patient's care. The physician is responsible for the administration and monitoring of psychopathological medication when necessary. The use of medication is a joint decision between the physician and patient and/or treatment guardian. University Hospital and Clinics staff are available to treat MUPC patients who may have other medical problems.

Discharge planning
Discharge planning is an ongoing process. It begins with the patient's admission. The social worker, psychiatrist and patient work together to develop a discharge plan that includes follow-up services.
