Events planned for Missouri Telehealth Network month
The Missouri Telehealth Network will host its second annual telehealth month in October. A variety of activities are planned to increase awareness about advancements in health care through telecommunications.

The Missouri Telehealth Network is a program designed to enhance access to care in underserved areas of Missouri, to provide educational opportunities for health care providers, to further homeland security efforts related to disaster preparedness and response, and to provide research opportunities to clinicians. The network has more than 137 sites in 48 Missouri counties and has provided services in more than 15 medical specialties.

Events include:

  • Opening reception, including telehealth demonstrations, refreshments and giveaways, noon Wednesday, Oct. 1, in University Hospital’s main lobby
  • Polycom exhibit and “Innovative Technologies in Telehealth” presentation by Karen Edison, MD, medical director of the Missouri Telehealth Network, Philip C. Anderson Professor of Dermatology, chair of the Department of Dermatology and co-director of the University of Missouri Center for Health Policy; and Steve Kropp, director of outreach services and telehealth at Saint Luke's Health System in Kansas City, Mo., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, in University Hospital’s main lobby
  • Telestroke presentation by Elaine Skalabrin, MD, director of the University of Utah Telestroke Program, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in Acuff Auditorium, MA217
  • Telehealth exhibit, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in Columbia Regional Hospital’s 404 Diner

October 1

Pain management presentation scheduled
In recognition of National Pain Awareness Month, the University of Missouri Health Care Pain Committee will host a presentation, “Communicating to Enhance Collaboration and Outcomes,” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., 1 to 2 p.m. and 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at University Hospital, Room CE100.

The presentation will be given by Lori Ladd, MSN, APRN, BC, medical liaison at Purdue Pharma in Stanford, Conn. It will focus on communication and how to identify and use effective communication strategies for pain management.

October 3

Clinical Oncology Symposium
The 2008 Clinical Oncology Symposium will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the Elks Lodge in Columbia. It is designed for nurses, social workers and other oncology professionals.

Attendees will learn about evidence-based practices related to the clinical management and care of cancer patients and their families and about new technologies and therapies, genetics, nutrition, symptom management and palliative care.

Featured speaker Sally Petersen Karioth, PhD, RN, a professor at Florida State University’s College of Nursing in Tallahassee, will present “Put Your Own Oxygen Mask On First” and “Compassion Fatigue as a Paradigm for Cancer Caregiver Responses.”

October 6

Nursing scholarship golf tournament
The University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing will host its 9th annual “Fund the Drive for Nurses” scholarship golf tournament Monday, Oct. 6, at the Columbia Country Club. The tournament will include a women’s flight and a flight for men’s teams and men’s and women’s mixed teams.

The tournament fee is $400 per team for four-player teams. Teams must pay in advance for hold their spots, and the deadline to register is Friday, Sept. 19. Spots are available for 36 teams.

Registration begins at 10 a.m., lunch begins at 11 a.m. and the tournament begins at 12:30 p.m. A reception, auction and awards presentation will be held at approximately 5 p.m. Tickets for the lunch cost $10 and for the reception and auction cost $12 for non-golfers.

October 9

MU Health Ethics Conference
“Caring for the Difficult Patient,” will be held from Thursday, Oct. 9, to Saturday, Oct. 11.

The conference will begin Oct. 9 with the annual Pellegrino Lectureship, “The Current State of Professional Ethics,” by Edmund Pellegrino, MD, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MU Reynolds Alumni Center. Pellegrino is an adjunct professor of medicine and ethics at the MU Center for Health Ethics, emeritus professor of medicine and medical ethics at Georgetown University’s Center for Clinical Bioethics in Washington, D.C., and chair of the President’s Council on Bioethics. Registration is not required for the Pellegrino lecture.

The conference will continue from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 and 7:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 11. Registration is required for the events on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11. Registration costs $75 for faculty and staff.

The conference will be sponsored by the MU Center for Health Ethics, University of Missouri Health Care, the MU School of Medicine, the MU Sinclair School of Nursing and the MU School of Health Professions.

Film viewing to feature documentary on spirituality, health
The University of Missouri Center on Religion and the Professions will host a viewing of the film “Renewal” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in the MU Memorial Union’s Jesse Wrench Auditorium.

The film, part of the “Spirituality and Health” series, is a documentary about the religious environmental movement in the United States. A discussion will be led by Jan Weaver, director of environmental studies at MU. For more information, please visit http://corp.missouri.edu/.

Garage sale to benefit Ellis Fischel cancer screening van
A multi-family garage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at 15060 N. Highway 124 in Hallsville, Mo. Proceeds from the garage sale will be donated to Ellis Fischel Cancer Center’s mobile cancer screening van for digital mammography equipment.

October 22

University Hospital to host blood drive
University Hospital will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the hospital’s main lobby. Each person who attempts to donate will receive a free T-shirt.

October 23

Service Excellence Banquet
The annual Service Excellence Banquet will be held Thursday, Oct. 23, to honor the past year’s Service Excellence Heroes and winners of the Legend Award and Circle of Excellence Award for managers and assistant managers. The Legend Award and Circle of Excellence Award recognize University of Missouri Health Care employees who help fulfill our mission in one or more of the following areas: service, people, quality, finance, growth and community.

Missouri Rehabilitation Center will recognize its Service Excellence Heroes and Circle of Excellence Award winners at a reception in Mt. Vernon, Mo. All Legend Award winners will be honored at the systemwide event Oct. 23 in Columbia.

Wellness fair to offer flu shots, screenings, drawing
The University of Missouri Health Care employee wellness fair, sponsored by Healthy for Life, the T.E. Atkins University of Missouri Wellness Program, will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in University Hospital’s main lobby. The fair will offer health employee flu shots, health screenings, giveaway items and a drawing for exercise equipment.

Pastoral Care Week begins
Pastoral Care Week is recognized this week, today to Sunday, Oct. 26. The chaplains at University Hospital and Ellis Fischel Cancer Center provide spiritual guidance, prayer, emotional support and comfort to people of any faith. Our chaplains include Kerry Hawkins, Gary Ostercamp, Virginia Allen and Art Dyer. In addition, members of the Volunteer On-Call Chaplain Program provide supplemental coverage.

“Please take a moment this week – and every day – to extend your appreciation to our dedicated chaplains,” said Karen Harris, RN, director of service excellence. “The support they offer our patients, families and staff is immeasurable.”

Art in Health care to host Mizzou Spirit Day
University of Missouri Health Care’s Art in Health Care program will host Mizzou Spirit Day on Thursday, Oct. 30. The event will include a spirit rally from 1 to 2 p.m. in University Hospital’s main lobby. Employees are invited to wear black and gold and attend the event. Patients and visitors are also invited.

The spirit rally will feature Mike Alden, MU athletic director, members of the Marching Mizzou band, MU cheerleaders, the MU mascot Truman the tiger and Children’s Hospital mascot TJ. The event will also include an art display, music, refreshments and a raffle to win Mizzou items and football memorabilia.
