Kindergarten Special Eye Exams
New Missouri law requires all children in kindergarten or first grade entering school for the first time to have a comprehensive eye exam.* The Mason Eye Institute is offering a "KINDERGARTEN SPECIAL" through September for these vision exams. Appointments for this special will be at Eye Institute East, 404 Portland Avenue (street behind Columbia Regional Hospital), with Dr. Wolak or Dr. Gamble on any Monday or Wednesday from now through September 2008. Seminar on tuberculosis blood test
University of Missouri Health Care’s Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences will host a seminar about its interferon-based tuberculosis blood test, a highly accurate alternative to the tuberculosis skin test. The seminar will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in the MU Reynolds Alumni Center, Columns Ballrooms A and B. Refreshments will be served.

Deadline to register for chemotherapy and biotherapy course
An Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, and Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, Room 707A and B.

Nurses who are new to chemotherapy administration or seeking a review opportunity will learn about administering cytotoxic and biotherapeutic agents. The course is available to registered nurses who have been employed at University of Missouri Health Care for at least six months.

Upon successfully completing the course and passing a test, participants will receive an Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy and Biotherapy provider card. The card, which is valid for two years, confirms the participant has the knowledge needed to administer cytotoxic and biotherapeutic agents.

Healthy for Life wellness program Eat for Life course
Healthy for Life, the T.E. Atkins University of Missouri Wellness Program, will offer Eat for Life, a 10-week course to teach mind-body practices, such as mediation and yoga, and principles of intuitive eating to create a healthy relationship with food, mind and body.

The course, which will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Mondays beginning Sept. 15, is designed to help people with a history of chronic dieting or rigid rules about healthy eating and people who eat when bored, stressed or unhappy. Orientation will be held at noon Monday, Sept. 8. Class size is limited, and registration is required. The course costs $40, but $20 will be refunded to those who attend at least nine of the classes.

Green Meadows to hold diabetes management classes
University Physicians-Green Meadows will hold free group classes to help people living with diabetes manage the disease. “Diabetes Management: You Can Do It” will be held each Monday during September. Topics will include diet, exercise, medication and staying healthy.

The first class will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the Family Medicine Classroom, located off of the Green Team waiting room at the University Physicians-Green Meadows clinic, 3217 S. Providence Road. Classes will follow each Monday at the same time and run through Sept. 29.

September 10

Employees invited to construction information session
University of Missouri Health Care employees are invited to attend a master facilities plan and construction information session from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, in Acuff Auditorium, MA217.

Health system leaders will provide information about the master facilities plan and progress reports on construction. Participants are encouraged to ask questions.

Blood drive planned at Quarterdeck
An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Quarterdeck, Room QD118.

The Health Connection to host open house
The Health Connection will host an open house from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10. Free raffles, snacks and chair massages will be available from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m. For more information, please contact The Health Connection at (573) 882-1718.

September 11

Wellness program offers stress-reduction course
Healthy for Life, the T.E. Atkins University of Missouri Wellness Program, will host an eight-week course, the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Program, to teach tools for effectively responding to stress. The course will use mindfulness skills, such as meditation and yoga, and will provide information about stress, communication and wellness.

Classes will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning Sept. 18. Orientation will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. A retreat will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. Participants must practice daily outside of class. Class size is limited, and registration is required. The course costs $40, but $20 will be refunded to those who attend at least seven of the classes.

Children’s Miracle Network Street Party scheduled
University of Missouri Health Care employees and guests are invited to attend the fourth annual Children’s Miracle Network Street Party from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Mid America Harley-Davidson, located at 5704 Freedom Dr. in Columbia. All funds raised at the event will benefit Children’s Hospital.

The event will include games, face painting, raffles, crafts, remote car races and a “dunk-a-doc” booth. It will also include a performance by Gainor and Friends, a bluegrass band featuring Barry Gainor, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at University of Missouri Health Care, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Children’s Hospital patients to participate in game-day activities
Employees from Children’s Hospital will team up with the University of Missouri Athletics Department on Saturday, Sept. 13, to provide young cancer patients and their families with a day of fun-filled Tiger football activities, while raising awareness for childhood cancer.

The eighth annual event will begin at 11 a.m. with a tailgate party in the west parking lot of the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital. Children’s Hospital patients and their families will enjoy games, along with free food and drinks.

After the tailgate party, participants will watch the MU vs. University of Nevada football game at Faurot Field. Participants will wear gold T-shirts in honor of children who are battling cancer, those who have lost the battle and survivors of the disease.

Completed forms for Legend Award and Circle of Excellence Award must be received by 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15. The Legend Award and Circle of Excellence Award recognize University of Missouri Health Care employees who help fulfill our mission in one or more of the following areas: service, people, quality, finance, growth and community. Nominations can be submitted by any health system employee.

Pain awareness booth to be held at University Hospital
In recognition of September as Pain Awareness Month, a booth with information on pain will be staffed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in University Hospital’s main lobby.

Seminar on clinical trials scheduled
The University of Missouri School of Medicine’s Office of Compliance and Quality and the MU Sinclair School of Nursing will host a seminar, “Clinical Trials 101,” from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in Acuff Auditorium, MA217.

The seminar, designed for investigators, research coordinators and other research support personnel, will be presented by Michael Perry, MD, professor of internal medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology and director of clinical trials at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and the School of Medicine.

Psychiatry to host Lamberti Special Guest Lecture
The Department of Psychiatry will host its Lamberti Special Guest Lecture, “Psychotherapy with Self-destructive and Suicidal Borderlines,” by Eric Plakun, MD, from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in Acuff Auditorium, MA217. Plakun serves as director of admissions and professional relations at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, Mass.

September 18

Healthy for Life employee Tango dance lesson
Healthy for Life, the T.E. Atkins University of Missouri Wellness Program, will host an employee Tango dance lesson from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at MU’s Memorial Union, in the Mark Twain Ballroom. Cory Keck, a dance instructor from Twilight Dance Studio, will lead the session. The session costs $2.

Seminar on aging and technology
“Aging and Technology: Exploring Translational Research,” will be presented by George Demiris, PhD, MSc, from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the University of Missouri Memorial Union, Room S203.

Demiris is an associate professor of biobehavioral nursing and health systems and director of the Clinical Informatics and Patient Centered Technologies Program at the Washington University School of Nursing in St. Louis. He is also an associate professor of biomedical and health informatics and director of the Biomedical and Health Informatics Graduate Program at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Health management and informatics golf tournament
The University of Missouri Health Management and Informatics Graduate Student Association will hold its Fall Classic Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept. 19, at the L.A. Nickell Golf Course in Columbia. Registration and lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The tournament will begin at 1 p.m.

The entry fee for four-person teams in the 18-hole tournament is $200. Proceeds will support professional development activities and travel to national meetings for health management and informatics graduate students. Deadline to register for the Nursing scholarship golf tournament
Friday, Sept. 19 is the deadline to register for the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing 9th annual “Fund the Drive for Nurses” scholarship golf tournament to be held Monday, Oct. 6, at the Columbia Country Club. The tournament will include a women’s flight and a flight for men’s teams and men’s and women’s mixed teams.

The tournament fee is $400 per team for four-player teams. Teams must pay in advance to hold their spots, and the deadline to register is Friday, Sept. 19. Spots are available for 36 teams.

The Excellence in Missouri Foundation has announced University of Missouri Health Care will be granted a site visit for the Missouri Quality Award from Monday, Sept. 22, to Wednesday, Sept. 24.

Miracles for Kids Radiothon
The Children's Miracle Network Radiothon, "Miracles for Kids," will be broadcast from University Hospital's lobby from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, though Friday, Sept. 26. Volunteers are needed to answer phones and accept pledges during two-hour shifts at the radiothon. Proceeds from the event will benefit Children’s Hospital through Children’s Miracle Network.

David Mountjoy, MHA, director of clinic operations, has volunteered at the radiothon for eight years. He said that whether donating time volunteering or donating money, the radiothon is great opportunity to help Children’s Hospital.

The radiothon will be broadcast on 93.9 FM, The Eagle; 94.3 FM, KAT Country; 96.7 FM, The Rocker; and 106.9 FM, Y107. Nurse, support staff conference
The University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing will host its 11th annual Conference for Office and Clinic Nurses and Support Staff from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Peachtree Catering and Banquet Center in Columbia.

The conference will provide information for nurses, customer service personnel and medical office assistants. It will include information on adult and pediatric care, managing difficult conversations in the workplace and triage and medical urgencies in office and clinical settings. Breast cancer survivor Heather Carver, PhD, associate professor of theatre at MU, will perform “Booby Prize: A Comedy about Breast Cancer.”

Speaking of Women’s Health event scheduled
University of Missouri Health Care will be a sponsor for the Speaking of Women’s Health Girls’ Night Out event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Woodcrest Chapel, located at 2201 W. Nifong Blvd. in Columbia.

Jill Stevens, RN, a sergeant in Utah National Guard, will present “Running Through the Minefield: From Cover Girl to Combat.” Stevens has served in the army in Afghanistan, was top female finisher in the Afghanistan Marathon and won the Miss Utah pageant.

Ellis Fischel memorial service planned
Ellis Fischel Cancer Center will host a memorial service to celebrate and honor the lives of loved ones lost to cancer and those who cared for them. The service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, in Ellis Fischel’s first-floor lobby. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served.

Festival proceeds to benefit Children’s Hospital
The Broadfield Plaza Festival, a fundraiser for Children’s Hospital, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the corner of west Broadway and Broadfield Drive. The event will include music, a clown, face painting, prize drawings, a raffle, food and drinks and a children’s inflatable play area. An ambulance, a fire truck and a police car will be displayed.

September 29

Ellis Fischel to host blood drive
Ellis Fischel Cancer Center will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, in Room 707. Each person who attempts to donate blood will receive a coupon for a free pint of Culver’s ice cream.
