Happiness for Health Emotional health is essential to a child's physical health. Happiness for Health provides sick and injured chidren with toys, stuffed animals, games and parties, to make a difficult — and sometimes frightening — hospital stay more bearable. Quality health care for a hospitalized child requires more than talented physicians and staff supported by the latest technology. A hospital stay can be a difficult emotional experience for a sick or injured child suddenly separated from home and family. The Happiness For Health program serves the emotional needs of all the young patients in Children's Hospital at University of Missouri Health Care. 
To provide comfort and security, the program purchases toys, stuffed animals and games the children can play with in the Hospital and, for continuity and support, take home with them. The program also provides parties for children who are in the Hospital on their birthdays and other special occasions. The Happiness For Health program is an endowment fund created in 2001 by MU law professor Douglas E. Abrams with the royalties from his book, Children and the Law-Doctrine: Policy and Practice. To make the fund permanent, only part of its investment return is used each year and the remaining amount is reinvested in the principal to offset the effects of inflation. In other words, the Happiness For Health program will continue in perpetuity. It has the area's only pediatric intensive-care unit and its first and most experienced neonatal intensive-care unit.
