Chiari Type I Malformation Neurologic Examination
You will receive a thorough neurologic evaluation when being evaluated for Chiari I malformation. All or some of the following tests may be performed during your clinic visit.
- Cognitive evaluation
Your examiner will ask if you know the date, place, your full name and similar questions. This helps determine if you have a problem with thinking and memory.
- Reflexes
Using a small reflex hammer, your examiner will lightly tap areas in your ankle, knee and arms. The test determines if your reflexes are normal.
- Cerebellar function
The cerebellum is the area of the brain that controls coordination. You will be tested to determine if it is functioning properly. You may be asked to walk, touch your finger to nose, stand with your eyes closed and feet together, and perform movements with the hands and feet.
- Cranial nerves
These are the nerves in the brain that control facial movements and sensation. Your examiner will shine a light in each eye to determine if your pupils react properly. Hearing, tongue movement and facial movements also may be checked.
- Sensory examination
Sensation is checked using light touch and pinprick. The latter is done gently, using a safety pin. These tests will determine if any areas are numb or have decreased sensation.
- Motor examination
This exam tests strength in the arms and legs. It generally is done by testing handgrips, muscle strength and leg strength.
