“Each year, thousands of children in the United States are diagnosed with diabetes,” said Bert Bachrach, M.D., director of the pediatric diabetes program at Children’s Hospital. “So raising awareness and funding for a program such as ours is a very worthy cause. Our program at Children’s Hospital remains one of the nationwide leaders in providing quality care to children with diabetes. Our reputation is founded upon decades of research and landmark discoveries in the area of pediatric diabetes.”

MU’s pediatric diabetes program was started by Robert Jackson, M.D., in the 1960s. In 1978, David Goldstein, M.D., joined University of Missouri Health Care and took over as director of the program. Goldstein pioneered the multidisciplinary approach to caring for pediatric diabetes patients. He also involved the program in the largest national diabetes trial to date. The trial was a groundbreaking, ten-year study that began in 1986 and proved that controlling the blood sugar levels in diabetes patients dramatically affected their long-term health. Bachrach was named director of the program in 2004.
