Mrs. Missouri to speak at Annual Diabetes Day
University of Missouri Health Care’s Cosmopolitan International Diabetes & Endocrinology Center will host its 16th annual Diabetes Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, in the Health Pavilion at Columbia Regional Hospital, 402 Keene Street, in Columbia.
Jessica Coates, R.D., a certified diabetes educator at McCune-Brooks Hospital in Carthage, Mo. and Barton County Memorial Hospital in Lamar, Mo., will deliver the keynote address at 1 p.m. A question-and-answer session will follow her presentation.
Coates was crowned Mrs. Missouri in May 2007. Her passion for teaching diabetes care has motivated Coates to adopt Type 2 Diabetes awareness as her platform.
The event will feature a variety of health screenings, including blood pressure, body mass index and osteoporosis screenings. Medical experts will be available to offer information about issues specific to persons who have diabetes, such as medications, insulin pumps, glucose meters and nutritional guidelines.
The American Diabetes Association estimates almost 21 million children and adults in the United States are living with diabetes. Nearly one-third of those people are not aware they have the disease.
Diabetes Day is free and open to the public. For more information, please call (573) 884-0769.
