MU Family Medicine to receive award
The University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine’s Family Medicine Interest Group will receive the 2007 Program of Excellence Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians in August at the 2007 National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students in Kansas City.
The award is presented each year by the academy to 10 medical schools for stimulating student interest in family medicine and family medicine programming.
Physicians, staff and students in the department participate in both educational activities and community service projects, such as “Tar Wars,” an anti-tobacco campaign in which group members meet annually with hundreds of rural mid-Missouri elementary school students to discourage them from smoking.
The MU School of Medicine’s Department of Family and Community Medicine was recently ranked second in the nation for family medicine in the annual U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools, 2008 Edition. The department has been ranked in the top three in this category for the past 14 years.
