MU joint specialist provides information on hip and knee arthritis

Sonny Bal, MDSonny Bal, M.D., assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine and joint replacement specialist at University of Missouri Health Care, will conduct a community seminar on hip and knee replacement surgery at 3 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the Quality Inn and Suites Conference Room, Highway 36, in Hannibal, Mo.

Bal will present the latest information patients should know about hip and knee replacement surgery, and discuss computer navigation technology, minimally invasive surgery, hip resurfacing, early detection and treatment of hip arthritis in young adults and patient expectations. He will also answer questions participants may have concerning joint replacement.

“The best patient is the informed patient,” said Bal. “Those who educate and familiarize themselves with the planned procedure, its attendant risks and benefits, and the full complement of potential outcomes will realize the best benefits. That’s what this seminar is about. I highly encourage those who have questions or concerns about arthritis and joint health to attend.”

Bal is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and a graduate of Cornell University Medical College. He served as a resident physician at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University. As an MU joint replacement specialist, his clinical interests include ceramic bearing surfaces in total hip and knee replacements, and he is currently conducting research in new materials used in implants and the molecular causes of osteoarthritis.

Although the seminar Bal will conduct is free, reservations are recommended. Please call (573) 882-3104 to reserve a seat.
