MU, local agencies sponsor new safety program for mature motorists

University of Missouri Health Care and the Columbia Mature Driver Committee will co-sponsor a new safety program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the Lenoir Community Center, 3710 S. Lenoir Drive in Columbia, to assist older adults in maximizing safe driving practices.

CarFit is a program developed and sponsored by the American Society on Aging, the American Occupational Therapy Association, the American Association of Retired People and the American Automobile Association. The program involves the use of trained professionals who lead mature drivers through a 12-point checklist with their vehicles to evaluate fit and function. The purpose of CarFit is to offer recommendations for adjustments to each owner’s vehicle that are meant to enhance safe operation on an individual basis.

“By 2030, one in five drivers will be age 65 or older,” said Lezlie Dahlke, R.N., coordinator of trauma outreach education at University Hospital. “With more than 30 million older drivers operating motor vehicles, the CarFit program is a resource that offers expertise in maximizing the safe operation and personal fit of each person’s vehicle.”

An occupational therapist will also be on hand to provide information to older drivers on how to strengthen and maintain driving health.

Drivers 50 years or older are encouraged to attend the CarFit program. Each evaluation with recommendations is expected to take about 30 minutes.

To make an appointment for the event or for more information about the CarFit program, please contact Dahlke at (573) 884-6381.
