MU surgeon elected to lead national society
Steve Eubanks, M.D., Hugh E. Stephenson Jr. Chair of Surgery at University of Missouri Health Care and the W. Alton Jones Distinguished Professor of Surgery at University of Missouri-Columbia’s School of Medicine, has been elected president of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) for the 2007-2008 year.
Eubanks has been a member of the SAGES Board of Governors since 1997. He served as SAGES first vice president from 2002-2004 and program director for the 2003 annual meeting in Los Angeles. He previously served as chair of the Resident Education and Guidelines Committees, co-chair of the Development Committee. He was a recipient of the SAGES 1998 Young Researcher’s Award.
With more than 5,500 members, SAGES is the largest professional organization of gastrointestinal surgeons in the United States and the leading international society for modern minimally invasive and endoscopic surgery. As president of SAGES, Eubanks will guide the association in fulfilling its mission, including increasing training in laparoscopy and therapeutic endoscopy, evaluating emerging technologies, continuing to set the standards of practice in laparoscopy, fostering clinical and basic science research and expanding educational activities in laparoscopy across the globe.
Eubanks came to University of Missouri Health Care in 2004 after serving 10 years with Duke University Medical Center, where he became a leader in laparoscopic surgery and helped form and direct Duke’s minimally invasive center. Since his arrival, Eubanks has been successful in attracting other top minimally invasive surgeons to MU.
University of Missouri Health Care’s system of hospitals, clinics and telehealth sites employs approximately 6,000 clinicians, scientists, educators and other health professionals. The system includes University Hospital and Clinics, Children’s Hospital, Columbia Regional Hospital, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and University Physicians, all based in Columbia, Mo. The health system also includes a long-term acute care facility, Missouri Rehabilitation Center, in Mount Vernon, Mo. Academic affiliates of the health system include the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, Sinclair School of Nursing and School of Health Professions. Other affiliates of the health system include Rusk Rehabilitation Center in Columbia, Mo.; Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, Mo., and Cooper County Memorial Hospital in Boonville, Mo.
