MU School of Medicine supports Camp Hickory Hill gala featuring Miss Missouri

Camp Hickory Hill, which is dedicated to helping children and teens with diabetes, will hold a gala dinner featuring Miss Missouri Sarah French at 6 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Lenoir Woods Banquet Hall. The University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, which provides medical services to Camp Hickory Hill, is the gala’s primary sponsor.

More than 175,000 teens and children in the United States have diabetes, and another two million have pre-diabetes. How well children with diabetes care for their health determines the length and quality of their lives. Often, children with diabetes never receive the training necessary to manage their diabetes due to expense or lack of educational facilities.

The primary purpose of Camp Hickory Hill is to educate people — especially children — with diabetes about the illness and how to manage the disease. The camp’s educational programs take place in a recreational setting located approximately 5 miles northwest of Columbia. This safe and fun environment combines enjoyable camping experiences with training that reinforces good diabetes care and control. Programs are managed by a skilled camping and medical staff.

The gala on May 4 will recognize supporters and encourage additional support for Camp Hickory Hill, which is also known as the Central Missouri Diabetic Children’s Camp, Inc. The not-for-profit, tax-exempt corporation was established in 1972. Administered by a volunteer board of directors, the camp operates primarily through donations. No child has been denied admission to the camp due to an inability to pay.

In addition to Miss Missouri Sarah French, presenters at the gala will include campers and camp leaders, as well as physician specialists in pediatric diabetes from MU’s medical school. Presenter David Goldstein, M.D., who served as director of the pediatric diabetes program at MU Children’s Hospital, pioneered a multidisciplinary approach to treating children with diabetes and led breakthrough research on blood sugar control.

The gala also will include a wine tasting by Les Bourgeois Winery & Restaurant, auctions and musical performances by Harmony Creek Strings.

Other gala sponsors include Bill Mees, Maxine Glenn, the MU Cosmopolitan International Diabetes Center, the Gastroenterology Group with Boone Hospital Center, Roche Diagnostics, Dr. John Pecorak, the Newkirk Family, Dr. Michael Trendle, the Cosmos Luncheon Club and Cosmos Show Me Club.

The gala is an invitation-only event, but members of the media are welcome to attend.
