Children’s Hospital honors staff and contributors

Children’s Hospital at University of Missouri Health Care recently celebrated the accomplishments and recognized the contributions of employees, community members and donors at the “Miracles in Action” gala held July 11 at Lela Raney Wood Hall in Columbia.

Four staff members from Children’s Hospital were honored for their impact on pediatric patients. They include William Crist, M.D., Ted Groshong, M.D., Jean Howell, R.N. and Cara Hirner, R.N.

Crist, the Hugh E. and Sarah D. Stephenson Dean of the University of Missouri School of Medicine and professor of child health, was honored with the KRCG Champion of Hope Award for his lifelong commitment to children through his work as a pediatric cancer investigator and dean of the School of Medicine.

Groshong received the Zimmer Radio Group Healing Hands Award for his positive rapport with patients, families and staff. Groshong is chair of the Department of Child Health, medical director of Children’s Hospital, chief of pediatric nephrology, associate dean for alumni affairs, associate professor emeritus and Children’s Miracle Network Professor in Pediatrics.

Howell, department manager of staffing support services, received the First National Bank and Trust Company Community Hero Award for her involvement and leadership in the annual Sporting Clay Shoot. More than $100,000 has been raised through the tournament for Children’s Hospital during the past 13 years.

Hirner, clinical supervisor for pediatrics, received the University of Missouri Children’s Hospital Strive for Excellence Award for her dedication to pediatric patients.

Children’s Hospital is the largest and most comprehensive pediatric health care center in mid-Missouri. Housed at University Hospital and Columbia Regional Hospital, the 115-bed hospital is the only facility in mid-Missouri offering comprehensive, specialized children’s services such as trauma care, neonatal transport, child life therapy, a pediatric intensive care unit and a pediatric hematology and oncology outpatient unit.
