Kessel Named Chief Of Medical Staff At University Hospital

COLUMBIA, Mo. –James Kessel, M.D., vice chief of medical staff at University Hospital, will become chief of medical staff on Nov. 1.

Kessel currently serves as professor of clinical surgery in the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He previously served as medical director of trauma at University of Missouri Health Care.

Before joining the faculty at MU’s Hugh E. Stephenson Jr. Department of Surgery in 2003, Kessel established and served as director of trauma services at Charleston Area Medical Center in West Virginia from 1986 to 1998. He was a founder of the West Virginia State Trauma Audit and Review (WVSTAR), and he was instrumental in the development of a statewide trauma system in West Virginia.

Since Kessel’ s arrival in 2003 at the MU School of Medicine, he has been active with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and served in a leadership role as a founding author of the Rural Trauma Team Development Course. The rural trauma team course is now being taught internationally.

Kessel, who serves as chair of the hospital’s Utilization Review Committee, received his medical degree from the Thomas Jefferson University College of Medicine in 1974. His surgical residency was followed by a trauma fellowship at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He is board-certified in general surgery.
