Safe Kids Day, Fun Run Set For June 23 At Children's Hospital
COLUMBIA, Mo. ― University of Missouri Children’s Hospital will hold Safe Kids Discovery Day from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23, in the MU Women’s and Children’s Hospital Health Pavilion parking lot at 404 Keene St.
The carnival-style event is free and will feature live stage acts throughout the day, including fitness instructions, a dog show by Ann Gafke and music performances by the MU School of Music. Several booths at the event will offer tips on injury prevention and child safety. Children will also have an opportunity to explore a fire truck and prizes will be raffled hourly. Scotty Cox from Clear 99 will emcee the event.
“Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 nationwide,” said Michele Imes, injury prevention and safety outreach coordinator at MU Children’s Hospital. “Children’s Hospital and our injury prevention and safety outreach program want to involve the community with this event to educate, motivate and encourage a healthy and safety-conscious lifestyle that will ultimately benefit our youth.”
In addition to the Safe Kids Discovery Day event, a separate “Fun Run” officiated by ABC 17’s Neville Miller and co-sponsored by the Columbia Track Club and Ready Set Start will offer children ages 6 to 17 a chance to compete in a 3K or 5K race, both starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at the same location. Registration for the races is required and begins at 7:45 a.m. Cost for the race is $25, and prizes will be awarded for each age group.
