Mile-a-Day Marathon Encourages People to Get Moving While Helping Local Kids

COLUMBIA, Mo. - During the month of October, Children's Miracle Network is inviting the community to participate in the inaugural 27.2 mile Miracle Marathon to raise funds for University of Missouri Health Care's Children's Hospital.

Miracle Marathon is a virtual fundraiser in which participants may run, walk, bike, swim, kayak - any form of motion - for one mile per day beginning on Oct. 1, 2013. At 1:27 p.m. Oct. 27, participants will meet at Lemone Industrial Boulevard in Columbia to finish the final 1.2 miles together, completing the 27.2 mile goal.

"A typical marathon is 26.2 miles, but for this marathon Children's Miracle Network added an extra mile to support the kids of Children's Hospital," said Kristin Fritschie, Children's Miracle Network coordinator at MU Children's Hospital. "It's just a fun and healthy way to help children throughout the state of Missouri who benefit from the care they receive at Children's Hospital."

"Children's hospitals throughout the country depend on community support to provide lifesaving care," said Timothy Fete, M.D., MU Children's Miracle Network Professor in Pediatrics, medical director of MU Children's Hospital and chair of the MU School of Medicine's Department of Child Health. "This mile-a-day event is a great way to benefit local children and make a healthy lifestyle choice to be active at the same time."

Registration for the event costs $27.20, and participants are encouraged to try to raise $10 from friends and family members for each mile they complete for a total of $272. All funds raised through the event will benefit MU Children's Hospital.
