MU Women's and Children's Hospital Expands Pediatric Emergency Services

COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri Women's and Children's Hospital will celebrate the expansion of its pediatric emergency services with a ribbon-cutting event at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 24, in the hospital's new emergency room lobby, located at 404 Keene St.

Representatives from the Columbia Chamber of Commerce will join physicians and staff for the ceremony, which will also include a tour of the newly renovated and expanded facility.

MU Women's and Children's Hospital's emergency department has been expanded to include six additional examination rooms. The new facility now includes seven rooms specifically for pediatric patients and six rooms for adults. The pediatric and adult sections provide dedicated spaces for care of both adults and kids.

The pediatric portion of the emergency department was also updated to reflect the jungle decor currently found throughout MU Children's Hospital. Additionally a larger, more convenient lobby has been designated for those who use the hospital's emergency services.

The expansion is not just about bricks and mortar, however.

"We are very proud that we have the only emergency room in central Missouri with physicians and nurses who have specialized training in pediatric emergency care," said George Koburov, M.D., chief of pediatric emergency medicine at MU Women's and Children's Hospital. "Our staff includes the area's only board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric emergency medicine physicians, as well as nurses with advanced pediatric emergency medicine certification."

"Having an emergency room in a dedicated children's hospital allows our patients access to a comprehensive network of pediatric specialists," said Keri Simon, executive director of MU Women's and Children's Hospital. "When a child needs emergency medical attention, we have experts in specialties ranging from orthopaedics to infectious diseases and many more areas. At Children's Hospital, we recognize that children aren't just small adults when it comes to their health care needs."

MU Women's and Children's Hospital is Missouri's only hospital dedicated to the care of women and children. It offers more than 30 pediatric specialties, including radiology, a pediatric sleep lab, plastic and reconstructive surgery, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, Missouri's first clinic for children with fetal alcohol syndrome and the area's only outpatient pediatric blood disorders and cancer unit.
