Nueterra, MU Health Care Purchase Callaway Community Hospital
University of Missouri Health Care will participate as a minority owner in a joint venture to own and operate Callaway Community Hospital in Fulton, Missouri.
Callaway Community Hospital is located 25 miles from Columbia in Fulton, Missouri. It is an acute-care hospital with 37 beds.
The purchase of Callaway Community Hospital was announced December 4 by Nueterra, a global health care management company based in Leawood, Kansas, which will be the majority owner of the hospital, and MU Health Care.
“MU Health Care and Nueterra have a unified goal – to advance the health of the communities we serve,” said Mitch Wasden, CEO/COO of MU Health Care. “We believe this collaboration will help us meet that goal by improving access to quality health care.”
As part of the purchase of Callaway Community Hospital by Nueterra and MU Health Care, the hospital will be renovated on the interior and exterior to update and provide additional technology and service lines.
MU Health Care and the MU School of Medicine have had longstanding ties to Callaway County. For more than 40 years, the MU Department of Family and Community Medicine has provided primary care to patients in Callaway County at the University Physicians-Callaway Physicians clinic and the Callaway Community Hospital. MU faculty and resident physicians see more than 15,000 outpatients each year in Callaway County. Since 1974, approximately 400 family medicine resident physicians have trained at the Callaway County outpatient clinic and hospital. More than half of those doctors are still practicing in Missouri, and many still serve in rural and underserved areas.
Nueterra and MU Health Care will make renovations over the next several months to the 37-bed acute care hospital. Under the MU Health Care and Nueterra partnership, the hospital will continue to provide acute care and outpatient services through local expertise in a community-hospital environment.
“Nueterra has a strong record of improving access, affordability and quality of care in communities similar to Fulton,” said Dan Tasset, chair of Nueterra. “Through this partnership with MU Health Care, we are committed to being a part of this community and empowering physicians and health care providers to offer the highest quality of care possible.”
“Health care today requires collaboration, and MU Health Care is always exploring ways to advance the health of our community and the state of Missouri,” Wasden said.
