Safe Kids Day Set for May 9 at MU Children's Hospital
COLUMBIA, Mo. — University of Missouri Children’s Hospital will hold its fourth annual Safe Kids Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the MU Women’s and Children’s Hospital Health Pavilion parking lot at 404 Keene St. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors into the hospital’s conference center.
The carnival-style family event is free and will feature live stage acts throughout the day.
The first 100 children at the event will be fitted and receive a free bike helmet.
Several booths at the event will offer tips on injury prevention and child safety.
This year the event includes a farm safety area with an inflatable BB gun range, tractors, lawn mower and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety, as well as farm-themed games.
Children also will have an opportunity to explore a fire truck, and children who complete the safety hero challenges will be entered to win a grand prize, including season passes to Six Flags St. Louis, summer memberships to Macher Aquatic Center, Great Wolf Lodges waterpark passes, and St. Louis and Branson weekend getaways. Free hot dogs, chips, cotton candy and popcorn will be available for participants.
“Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 nationwide,” said Sheila Robertson, injury prevention and safety outreach coordinator at MU Children’s Hospital. “Safe Kids Day is a way for MU Children’s Hospital to involve the community and educate children and their families about safety-conscious and healthy lifestyles. Our goal is to encourage healthy habits among kids as they continue to grow.”
