The Mid-Missouri Community Donates $228,539 to Children's Hospital During Annual Radiothon
Six-year-old Kyler VanMatre donated the allowance he had been collecting in his piggy bank to the ninth annual Missouri Credit Union "Miracles for Kids" radiothon, which benefits patients at MU Children's Hospital. COLUMBIA, Mo. — A 6-year-old Columbia boy thankful for his health came carrying his piggy bank into MU Children’s Hospital today. He was just one of the donors helping to make miracles happen at the Children’s Miracle Network radiothon this week.
For the past two days, MU Children’s Hospital patients and parents have shared their stories of health and healing, and in many cases this happened after unexpected diagnoses and injuries. All spoke about the caregivers at Children’s Hospital who helped to make miracles happen.
The mid-Missouri community rallied behind MU Children’s Hospital and answered the call to be miracle makers, raising $228,539 during the ninth annual Missouri Credit Union “Miracles for Kids” radiothon.
One donation Friday morning came from 6-year-old Kyler VanMatre. Kyler brought in his piggy bank to donate his allowance.
“We have talked to him since an early age about giving to others,” said Amanda VanMatre, Kyler’s mother. “The first year he donated we explained to him how some children are not as healthy as he is and this is our way of showing how grateful we are he is healthy. This year he made the decision to donate all from his bank to this cause.”
Kyler has a special bank marked for sharing. He decided this year he wanted all of that money from his collected allowance to go Children’s Hospital.
Local Zimmer radio stations 93.9 FM The Eagle, 94.3 FM KAT Country, 99.3 FM Clear 99 and 106.9 FM Y107 broadcasted live from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 5, and Friday March 6 from the lobby of MU Women’s and Children’s Hospital, 404 Keene St.
MU Children’s Hospital teamed up with Children’s Miracle Network, the Missouri Credit Union and Zimmer Radio Group to host the annual fundraiser. All $228,539 raised during the radiothon stays at MU Children’s Hospital to help local patients.
Children’s Miracle Network is a year-round fundraising program to benefit hospitals providing health care for children. Created by the Osmond Foundation in 1983, Children’s Miracle Network includes 170 hospitals nationwide.
