From the Associate Program Director

Breton Barrier, MDI invite you to carefully consider the University of Missouri OB/GYN residency program. It is difficult find a more dedicated group of educators, willing to share their knowledge and experience with you. We are personally vested into this program to provide very best possible educational experience.

I received my OB/GYN residency education at MU between the years 1996 and 2000. This excellent experience prepared me for duty in the United States Air Force as an OB/GYN faculty member at a large residency-training program in San Antonio, Texas. After this service commitment was fulfilled, my wife and I considered numerous job opportunities, and realized we had enjoyed the people and resources in Columbia, Missouri. Residency here had been good to BOTH of us, and the memories were pleasant, even with a toddler son and a newborn daughter entering the world at the beginning of a stringent internship! We enthusiastically returned to Columbia in 2005.

We made the right decision. My former faculty mentors are now close colleagues, and the nursing and administrative personnel have changed little. The country air is pleasant and easy, soccer and football practice for the kids is close by, and the conveniences of a large cosmopolitan city are available minus the rush-hour traffic. In short, life here is good.

Lifestyle is important, but even more important is the quality of the educational experience. Our educational program is innovative. We are one of the first programs in the country to develop a formal procedural simulation curriculum to give our residents a degree of surgical confidence before they even set foot in an operating room. This curriculum includes monthly laparoscopy simulation and animate (pig lab) training, a July “skills camp” experience, simulation of obstetrical emergencies using our Noelle high fidelity birth simulator, and ongoing evaluation and improvement using various surgical models.

In addition to practical learning experiences, we provide our residents close support as they plan for a career after residency. MU OB/GYN residency graduates are able to transition easily into private practice or to secure competitive fellowship positions depending on their career goals. Since 2002, approximately 20% of our graduates have transitioned into fellowship positions in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Gynecological Oncology.

Each one of our current residents is exceptionally strong and motivated to teach and to learn. We are looking for enthusiastic candidates to continue this tradition. Consider interviewing with us, explore our program firsthand and let us get to know you. I am sure you will be impressed with what we have to offer.

Warm regards,
