The internal medicine physician practice at Fairview is structured like that of a private practice physician or group practice to ensure patients have ready access to their personal physician. Every effort is made to schedule preventive and nonurgent care visits in a timely fashion with a patient's primary care physician. A patient's primary care physician usually will be available to treat urgent or acute illness, or illnesses that require fast but not emergency treatment such as high fever, severe vomiting, sprains or other intense pain. Care at the Fairview clinic is provided by board-certified internal medicine physicians, also called internists, as well as licensed resident physicians. If you experience urgent medical problems after business hours There is a physician on call after 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends and holidays. For urgent but not life-threatening problems, call the University Hospital operator at (573) 882-4141 and ask to page the physician on call for your physician. The on-call physician will direct you to the most appropriate place for you to receive care, which might include a visit to the clinic, urgent care center or emergency center.
