Trauma

The Frank L. Mitchell Jr., MD, Trauma Center is the only American College of Surgeons (ACS)-verified Level I Trauma Center in central Missouri and one of only four in the state. Staff members in University of Missouri Health Care's emergency rooms and trauma center treat more than 50,000 patients each year.

Patients needing trauma care receive world-class care even before they reach University Hospital. Whether they are transported by an ambulance with advanced life support-level prehospital care or by the Staff for Life Helicopter service, patients receive state-of-the-art clinical care and stabilization on their way to the hospital.

University Hospital's comprehensive program for the care of injured children and adults uses a multidisciplinary team approach. Specially trained physicians, nurses, therapists, technicians and social workers collaborate in the provision of high-quality patient care from the time of the injury through the rehabilitation process. As an ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center, a tertiary care referral center and a regional resource center, University of Missouri Health Care has the capability of providing total care of every aspect of injury, including prevention.

The U.S. Army Golden Knights elite parachute squad landed on the field at halftime of a University of Missouri football game to thank the physicians and staff of University Hospital's Frank L. Mitchell Jr., M.D., Trauma Center for saving their teammate, Sgt. 1st Class Howard Sanborn.
