Pediatric Emergency Medicine
We know kids, that is why we are proud to have the only urgent care and emergency room dedicated to kids in central Missouri. Our physicians are here to help your child feel better, treating everything from a rash to something more serious like a broken bone.
Urgent Care vs. Emergency Care
Urgent Care is designed to complement services provided by your primary care physician or pediatrician when those doctors' offices are typically closed. The MU Children's Hospital Urgent Care is designed for treatment of illnesses and injuries for which your child would normally receive care at their doctor's office. We offer these 'after hours' services as a convenience to you. Typically, Urgent Care involves a lower health insurance co-payment and shorter wait times than an emergency room. If your child's illness or injury requires it, we will direct you to the emergency room at MU Children's Hospital.
Our physicians are here for you and your child after hours and on weekends. As we know, not every ear ache and sore throat happens when you are at the doctor's office.

Emergency care hinges on rapid assessment, formation of plans of action, and follow-through with those plans. It involves all levels of caregivers: physicians, pre-hospital care providers, nurses, and ancillary staff such as respiratory therapy, radiology, etc. The MU Women's and Children's Hospital Emergency Room is a key component in the delivery of this emergency care, and is a leader in the providing critical and emergency care services to all patients.
The emergency room is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is staffed at all times with at least one attending-level physician, at least four registered professional nurses, and with support staff which includes clerical staff. As an integral part of MU Women's and Children's Hospital, it has access to the resources of the hospital to meet its mission. The emergency room provides medical screening exams and stabilization for all varieties of patient populations, including but not limited to those with medical, surgical, obstetric, trauma, pediatric, and psychiatric problems.
MU Women's and Children's Hospital expanded pediatric emergency services in April 2014 to include six additional examination rooms. The facility now includes seven rooms specifically for pediatric patients and six rooms for adults. Pediatric and adult spaces are separated to provide dedicated spaces for care of both adults and children.
The pediatric portion of the emergency department reflects the jungle décor found throughout MU Children's Hospital. A larger, more convenient lobby is part of the remodel designated for those who use the hospital's emergency services.
It is the only emergency room in central Missouri with physicians and nurses who have specialized training in pediatric emergency care. The staff includes the area's only board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric emergency medicine physicians, as well as nurses with advanced pediatric emergency medicine certification.
The emergency room allows patients access to a comprehensive network of pediatric specialists. When your child needs emergency medical attention, specialists ranging from orthopaedics to infectious diseases are now available. Contact us at 404 North Keene St., Columbia, MO, or 573-875-9000.
