Courtney’s Journey

What made you finally decide to take the steps toward surgery?

Many years of struggling to be healthy without success. Strong family history of diabetes and hypertension. I saw the future of poor health if something didn’t change in my life. I felt that weight loss surgery was the tool that I needed to make the necessary changes permanent.

How long did it take before you decided?

10 years.

What was your journey?

My husband was not supportive of the idea at first. He watched me struggle for many years with a multiple different plans and programs. After having two kids later, he finally realized that this was something that could really help me and reduce my frustration in regards to my weight. Once I had his support, the process became a lot easier.

Tell us a little bit about your experience with surgery and the aftercare.

I was very pleased with the care that I received from my physicians and nurses at the hospital.

How was the care at Missouri Bariatric Services?

The clinic has always been very responsive to my needs. The pre-operative process was very organized and the clinic was always very helpful in assisting me with getting approval from my insurance.

What were your reservations beforehand?

I was nervous, but I never really had any reservations.

How did you get to where you are?

It was really important for me to set a good example for my children. I knew I needed to change my behaviors if I expected my children to grow up healthy.

How did you feel right after surgery?

I was a little tired and week. After about 8 weeks, my energy began to slowly return. As I began working out, that continued to improve.

What about one year after?

I feel better now than I have in my entire life. I am much more confident and have more energy than I thought I could ever have. I no longer worry about carrying a laundry basket up a flight of stairs. I have all of the energy I need to do that and so much more.

Can you tell me about the difference in your health?

I was not on any medications prior to surgery. Simple daily activities are so much easier.

How do you stay motivated?

I attend support groups regularly. My family members are also very supportive. They keep me mindful.

If you could tell people just one thing about your weight loss, what would it be?

It is the best decision that I have made for myself and my family.
