Heather’s Journey

What made you finally decide to take the steps toward surgery?

I wanted my life back. I wanted to be more healthy and active for my family.

How long did it take before you decided?

One year of very heavy research.

What was your journey?

It has mostly been all up. I have had a few minor setbacks, but overall my experience has been very enjoyable and successful. I have improved my health and eating but have also made a significant impact in these areas with my immediate and extended family as well. They eat better and live healthier because of my changes.

Tell us a little bit about your experience with surgery and the aftercare.

My experience has been amazing. They have made sure that all aspects of my care have gone smoothly and with minimal complications.

How was the care at Missouri Bariatric Services?

The care through Missouri Bariatric Services has been amazing as well. They have always answered all of my questions. If ever they did not know the answer they always got back to me after they found it and in a timely fashion.

What were your reservations beforehand?

It is a risk and ‘major’ surgery. I really wasn’t sure if I could do it and follow through like I was supposed to.

How did you get to where you are?

I was very sick and afraid of dying. I was diagnosed with a condition and I knew my weight was making those symptoms worse. I was really afraid that I was going to die and that I wasn’t going to be able to enjoy my life and my children.

How did you feel right after surgery?

The first two weeks I really doubted myself. I thought ‘what have I done to myself’? After the pain subsided and I started to feel better my doubts began to fade away.

What about one year after?

Healthy. Energetic. I have a totally new life.

Can you tell me about the difference in your health?

I take very few medications. I can do so much more physically. Emotionally I am also able to handle things much more easily.

How do you stay motivated?

My family and children help me to stay on track. They have given me an added confidence and desire to continue on my journey.

If you could tell people just one thing about your weight loss, what would it be?

Stick to the plan! Don’t down play the exercise. The more active you are the easier the weight will come off and the easier it will be to maintain.
