Neuro-Oncology

Neuro-Oncology includes the diseases that occur as tumors in the brain and spinal cord and their coverings. Some of these tumors are malignant and aggressive in growth and others are benign or grow slowly.

We strive to achieve a multidisciplinary approach to care of patients with brain or spinal tumors, collaborating with specialists in medical oncology, radiation oncology, otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) surgical oncology, plastic surgery and endocrinology. If physicians from multiple specialties are needed, we do our best to try and schedule appointments on the same day, including necessary diagnostic tests, to minimize travel. Patient cases are discussed at multidisciplinary conferences to gain input from all needed specialties. While some treatments are available only at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center or University Hospital, other treatments may be able to be provided closer to home. We incorporate state-of-the-art surgical techniques, including intraoperative image guidance, brain mapping, awake craniotomy (for speech mapping, when needed), stereotactic radio surgery and placement of Gliadel wafers.

Some of the tumor types treated include:

  • Glioblastoma multiforme
  • Anaplastic astrocytoma
  • Oligodendroglioma
  • Neurocytoma
  • Meningioma
  • Vestibular schwannoma
  • Pituitary adenoma
  • Hemangioblastoma
  • CNS lymphoma
  • Metastatic carcinoma
