Urologic Surgery

The field of urologic surgery studies and manages both surgical and non-surgical disease of the urinary tract. The primary organs of interest are the adrenal gland, kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs. For many of these disease processes, surgery plays a central role in definitive management.

At University of Missouri Health Care, our surgeons offer a wide variety of surgical approaches, including endoscopic, laparoscopic, open and robotic assisted. Our comprehensive approach to the management of urologic oncology, female urology, benign prostate disease, urinary stone disease, pediatric urology, reconstructive surgery, infertility and transplantation is unparalleled in mid-Missouri. Facing any kind of urologic surgery creates a great deal of anxiety for most patients.

Will my body function normally following surgery?

Traditional open urologic surgery, in which large incisions are made to access the abdomenal and pelvic organs, has been the standard approach when surgery is warranted. Yet common drawbacks of this procedure include significant post-surgical pain, a lengthy recovery and an unattractive surgical incision.

A new category of surgery, introduced with the development of the da Vinci Surgical System, is being used by an increasing number of surgeons worldwide for prostatectomy and other urologic procedures. This minimally invasive approach, utilizing the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, is ideal for delicate urologic surgery.
